China is a popular destination for international travelers, offering historic landmarks, modern cities, diverse cuisine and cultural experiences. But there is another practical option worth considering during a visit: a comprehensive health check-up at a Chinese public hospital.

One of China's advantages is the relatively affordable cost of medical examinations, particularly at Grade A Tertiary (3A) public hospitals, the highest hospital classification in China.

For example, a comprehensive health check-up for men at a public hospital in Guangzhou costs approximately RMB 1,208 (USD 181), including blood tests, ultrasound examinations, chest imaging and other routine assessments.

How does this compare with health screening prices in other countries? And is it worth including a medical check-up in your China travel itinerary?

1. How Much Does a Health Check-Up Cost at a Public Hospital in China?

Let's look at a real example from The Third Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University, a Grade 3A public hospital in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.

The hospital offers a comprehensive health screening package for adult men, covering 25 examination categories.

Hospital Price: RMB 1,207.95 (approximately USD 181)

The package includes a broad range of examinations:

  • Blood and urine tests: Complete blood count, urinalysis and urine sediment examination.

  • Liver and kidney function: Liver enzymes, protein levels, creatinine, urea and uric acid.

  • Metabolic health: Blood glucose, cholesterol and lipid profile.

  • Thyroid function: Thyroid hormone testing.

  • Other laboratory investigations: Electrolytes, selected tumour markers, autoimmune antibodies and other blood tests.

  • Chest X-ray: Basic imaging of the lungs and chest.

  • Ultrasound examinations: Thyroid and cervical lymph nodes, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, urinary system and prostate.

  • Heart examination: Resting electrocardiogram (ECG).

  • Physical examinations: Internal medicine, surgical assessment, eye examination and ENT examination.

  • Additional assessments: Eye pressure and body composition analysis.

This package provides a broad overview of general health and includes several imaging examinations that may be charged separately in other healthcare systems.

Most routine examinations can generally be completed within half a day to one day, depending on the hospital's schedule. Some test results may require additional processing time.

2. How Do Health Check-Up Prices Compare Around the World?

To understand China's pricing advantage, we reviewed published health screening packages from medical providers in several countries and regions.

Although the packages differ in their exact examinations, they offer useful examples of the costs international patients may encounter.

Hong Kong: Approximately USD 550

In Hong Kong, JP Health Medical Services offers a Male Comprehensive Health Examination package for HK$4,300 (approximately USD 550).

The package includes blood and urine tests, liver and kidney function assessments, ECG, chest X-ray, and ultrasound examinations covering several abdominal organs and the prostate.

These examinations overlap substantially with the Guangzhou public hospital package.

At approximately USD 181, the Guangzhou package costs about one-third as much as this Hong Kong example.

For people living in Hong Kong or visiting the Greater Bay Area, a health check-up in Guangzhou or Shenzhen may therefore be an economical option.

Japan: Approximately USD 313

Japan has a well-established preventive health screening system known as Ningen Dock.

At Shonan Fujisawa Tokushukai Hospital, a half-day Ningen Dock programme costs JPY 49,500 (approximately USD 313).

This package includes general physical examinations, blood and urine tests, chest X-ray, abdominal ultrasound, ECG and gastrointestinal imaging.

The Japanese programme includes certain examinations not covered by the Guangzhou package, so the two are not identical.

Nevertheless, the Chinese public hospital package is approximately 42% less expensive, demonstrating China's competitive pricing for comprehensive screening.

Singapore: Approximately USD 639

Singapore offers a well-developed private health screening market, although comprehensive packages can be relatively expensive.

For example, Link Doctors lists its Essential Plus Men's Health Screening package at SGD 750 before GST, or SGD 817.50 including 9% GST, approximately USD 639.

The package includes routine laboratory tests, thyroid function tests, ECG, chest X-ray and abdominal ultrasound.

Compared with this example, the Guangzhou public hospital package costs considerably less.

However, pricing and service levels vary significantly between Singapore's public and private healthcare providers.

Thailand: Approximately USD 403

Thailand is a major medical tourism destination, known for its international hospitals and health screening programmes.

Bangkok Hospital offers a Superior Check-Up Package for adults aged 30–40 at THB 13,500 (approximately USD 403) under its published promotional pricing for 2026.

The package includes physician assessment, laboratory investigations and selected diagnostic examinations.

China's public hospital screening packages can be substantially less expensive than comparable services at some of Thailand's major private hospitals.

However, Thailand also has lower-priced screening options, and international patient services may differ between institutions.

United Kingdom: Approximately USD 1,160

Private health assessments in the United Kingdom can cost considerably more.

For example, Nuffield Health lists its 360 Health Assessment at GBP 869 (approximately USD 1,160).

This assessment includes medical consultations, health measurements, selected laboratory investigations and personalised health risk advice.

Unlike the Guangzhou hospital package, the British service focuses more heavily on consultation and health assessment rather than offering numerous imaging examinations.

Therefore, the prices reflect different service models and should not be interpreted as a direct like-for-like comparison.

India: Approximately USD 139

India is another country offering competitively priced medical examinations.

For example, Apollo Clinic advertises its ProHealth Comprehensive package at INR 12,999 (approximately USD 139).

This demonstrates that China is not necessarily the cheapest country for health screening.

Nevertheless, China's combination of competitively priced examinations, large public hospitals and diagnostic facilities makes it an attractive option for travelers already visiting the country.

Price comparison note: Figures are based on published provider prices reviewed in November 2026 and converted into USD using approximate exchange rates. Packages vary in examination content, service levels, eligibility and promotional conditions. They are examples rather than national average prices.

3. Why Are Health Check-Ups at Chinese Public Hospitals So Affordable?

Several factors contribute to the competitive pricing of health examinations in mainland China.

Public hospital pricing

Many medical services at China's public hospitals follow regulated pricing frameworks, helping maintain relatively affordable charges for routine laboratory and diagnostic examinations.

High patient volumes

Large public hospitals perform substantial numbers of laboratory and imaging examinations, allowing medical equipment and diagnostic facilities to be used efficiently.

Standardised screening packages

Public hospital health screening packages generally focus on providing defined examinations rather than extensive personalised VIP services.

This allows patients to access a broad range of tests without necessarily paying for additional hospitality or concierge services.

However, a higher number of examinations does not automatically mean better medical care. The most appropriate screening programme depends on a person's age, symptoms, medical history and individual health risks.

4. Why Consider a Health Check-Up During Your China Trip?

For travelers already planning to visit China, adding a health screening appointment can offer several practical benefits.

Affordable Comprehensive Examinations

China's public hospitals can provide laboratory testing, ultrasound examinations and other diagnostic services at competitive prices compared with many international private healthcare packages.

Access to Established Public Hospitals

Grade 3A public hospitals generally have extensive clinical departments, diagnostic facilities and specialist services.

For travelers who prefer examinations within a comprehensive hospital setting, this can be an appealing option.

Convenient Scheduling

Routine health screening appointments can often be arranged in advance.

Many packages can be completed within a morning or a single day, allowing visitors to incorporate their examinations into an existing travel itinerary.

For example, someone spending several days in Guangzhou could schedule a check-up in the morning and continue with other activities afterwards, provided they feel well and no additional examinations are necessary.

Specialist Follow-Up When Needed

If an examination identifies an abnormal result, a specialist consultation may be arranged for further evaluation.

This is an important consideration because health screening is not a substitute for a medical diagnosis.

Travelers who already have symptoms or known medical conditions should generally seek appropriate specialist assessment rather than relying solely on a routine screening package.

5. Planning Your Health Check-Up in China

Before attending a health screening appointment, international visitors should consider several practical points.

Choose an appropriate package. Screening should reflect age, medical history and individual risk factors. Not every available test is necessary for every person.

Confirm fasting requirements. Many blood tests and abdominal ultrasound examinations require fasting, often for approximately 8 hours. Preparation instructions should be confirmed with the hospital.

Bring identification. International visitors should generally bring their original passport for registration.

Allow enough time. Although many examinations can be completed in one morning, we recommend allowing at least half a day, and preferably some flexibility in case additional assessments are required.

Plan for the results. Some reports may not be issued immediately. Visitors should consider how they will receive their results and whether a follow-up consultation is needed.
